Granite2 Roadmap

We are planning many upgrades to GRANITE2 during the 2008/09 curling season and beyond. Our past releases and planned features are listed below. Please help us choose what to work on first using the Granite2 Features Poll on the right side of this page. The features are described below.

Note:
If you purchase GRANITE2, all upgrades will be free
for at least one year after your purchase date.

Version 2.3

Released April 2009
  • Physics

Fixed a bug in the collision physics. The moving stone would continue sliding way too far after making contact. It was a typo that made the stones too "soft". Thanks to D.R. for pointing it out and even demonstrating it with a video clip.

Version 2.2

Released March 2009
  • Scoreboard

Version 2.2 includes a scoreboard in the upper-left area of the window. Previous versions only showed the current score. The hammer is marked with an asterisk and steals are shown in a bold font.

  • Sounds for Sweeping and Yelling

When you click on the sweeping buttons, the computer lets out a satisfying yell ("Hard!!!!!"). You can also hear the brushes on the ice now -- so you know your sweepers are working. Please don't complain about the skip's voice -- that's me in there.

  • On-Ice Turn Indication

Before version 2., it was too easy to call a shot with the wrong turn. Now the selected turn is shown on the ice right behind the skip's brush. It's hard to miss. If you call the wrong turn now, it's your own fault. Smile

  • Deliver from the Skip's End

In previous versions, the camera would move from your carefully chosen position all the way to other end of the ice to throw the stone. Then it would move all the way back. It was dis-orienting. There are many complaints.

In this version, you throw the stone without changing your position. It's much easier. Plus, you can see the weight and line directly against the desired shot.

  • New Pre-Game Wizard

It's much easier to get started with the new Pre-Game Wizard. It walks you through all the options and launches your game or practice session.

  • Minor Changes

    • Auto-Preview is turned on by default while practicing (you can turn it off)
    • Camera tracks the position of the shooter (great for checking the angles)
    • Better icons on the turn buttons -- now you can tell them apart more easily
    • Forward-Back camera tracking is now distinct from Left-Right camera tracking
    • When playing against the computer, the computer will throw by itself (no need to click anymore)

Version 2.1

Released August 2008

  • Simplified installation
  • Enabled automatic upgrades to new releases
  • Improved error detection and reporting for graphics cards
  • Cosmetic enhancements

Version 2.0

Released March 2008

  • First release of GRANITE2

Future Plans

We have lots of ideas for new features and enhancements. Maybe too many ideas. We could use some help deciding what to work on first. Our main ideas are listed below -- please use the Granite2 Features Poll on the right to vote for your favourite, or contact us if your favourite feature is not on the list.

Smarter AI

The artificial intelligence (computer skip) is quite smart, but could be better. The goals for this feature are to make the AI harder to beat and make it more realistic.

Custom Teams

As of version 2.1, there is a limited ability to customize your team by setting the overall skill level. This feature will allow you to customize the name, appearance, and many individual skills (sweeping power, sweeping endurance, line accuracy, weight accuracy, maximum weight, etc).

Career Mode

Career mode will allow you to enter virtual bonspiels and leagues against computer opponents. It will include the addition of many computer teams to play against.

Online Play

With online play, you will be able to play against friends (or strangers) in your local network or over the internet. A match-making website for finding opponents will be included.

More Venues

We would like to add additional venues (rinks and arenas) for games. Each venue would look different and have its own ice conditions.

3D Curlers

We intentionally left out 3D curlers on the ice surface because they don't add much to the game. Maybe you disagree. If so, vote for 3D curlers in the feature poll.

Mac Version

We occasionally get requests for a Mac OS X version. We would love to make one, but we need to know that the demand is real.
